Anthony Gormley, Angel of the North
Compare and contrast + concerns
Compared to Angel, Spirit is much smaller and more organic in form. It is more abstract, roughly resembling seedlings while Angel is just a simplified human. Spirit is made of white marble, while Angel is made of steel, making it seem heavy and intimidating, while spirit gives an illusion of lightness. Also, Angel has “grids” and line that are solid and stern, as contrasted to the plain, flowing form of Spirit that represents the simple beauty of nature. Angel is open and bare, very exposed to its surroundings, while Spirit encloses within itself. Spirit appears more personal and intimate, dealing with nature, as well as being polished and clean as compared to the majestic Angel that overlooks the lands, which is rusted, showing the wreariness of time and the modernisation. Spirit looks complete, the five pieces come together to create wholeness, whereaes Angel stands alone looking like an abandoned construction, a bit like a skeleton.
